Le cauris est le premier objet utilisé comme monnaie. Avant l’or et l’argent, il est le premier support des échanges commerciaux dans la Chine millénaire, quelque quinze siècles avant notre ère. A bord des bateaux marchands, il franchit les océans et devint aussi la monnaie des anciennes civilisations africaines. Le cauris est également utilisé lors de rituels d’art divinatoire en Afrique (géomancie). Ils servent à prédire l’avenir au travers le lancé de 4 ou 7 coquillages.
